John Adams started out as a farm boy who wanted to be a lawyer.

His family wanted him to be a minister. However, John had other dreams.  At first he wanted to be a farmer, like his father. Later, he decided he wanted to study law.  He attended Harvard and graduated a year early in 1755 with a bachelor of arts degree.  Then he got a job as a school teacher. He was not fond of that job, so he commited himself to the practice of law.  Eventually he became a lawyer and opened his own law office.
One day he met Abigail Smith in Boston.  Like him, she loved books.  She was very frail, and when she was ill, he would come and read to her.  During a thunderstorm, he proposed to her and she accepted.
